AOTW: Channel ORANGE

So why see the world, when you’ve got the beach?

R&B artist frank ocean has been dropping music for nearly two decades. his earleist work was under the name lonny breaux before releasing music under his actual name in 2010. frank was formerly a member of the group odd future, with artists such as earl sweatshirt, tyler the creator and domo genesis before its disbandment in may 2015.

prior to the release of his first studio album, Frank was a ghostwriter for artists like justin bieber. feeling a lack of support from his label, def jam, frank released a free mixtape titled nostalgia, ultra in 2011. its success helped frank gain the attention and support needed for him to focus on a debut studio album. frank ocean reportedly wrote the lyrics for his album in just two weeks, though actual studio production took around nine months. eventually, in june 2012, channel orange was released.

the album's theme circulated around frank's early love interests, including the summer he first fell in love. the project marked a massive movement in R$B and hip-hop, as a new prospective of love and relationships was starting to be accepted. examples of this can be heard on songs Bad religion and forrest gump. the album went on to chart at 2 on the billboard 200, and win a grammy for best urban contemporary album.

despite frank ocean's ongoing break from the music industry and social media, he has left albums that laid the grundwork for the alternative r&B that many artists embrace today.
