AOTW: FREUDIAN
Who would’ve thought I’d get you?
Ashton Simmonds, better known as Daniel Caesar, is a Canadian artist, known for his smooth, soulful, gospel influenced RnB style music. With an ever-growing catalogue of widely renowned singles, EPs and albums, DC has made a name for himself as one of the biggest artists in modern times to come from the North.
DC’s debut studio album on streaming services, Freudian, was named after Sigmund Freud and his psychoanalytic theories on life, motivation and the development of mental complexity throughout stages of life. Caesar uses these theories to expand into themes of love, relationships, and self-discovery. This album is widely considered to be his best work and a beacon in contemporary RnB.
His clever portrayal of his gospel influence is shown in songs like Hold Me Now, which draws testament to loyalty and romance, and Loose, a melody about letting go of toxic relationships, “cutting that girl loose,” for the sake of both parties.
Caesar’s deterrence from the then common “trap&B” style that Canada (specifically Toronto) was known for with artists like The Weeknd, PND and Drake, is what set him apart from others, with his music having a more divine, sacred feel, while not shying away from complexity and dualism.
Simply, a timeless classic.
