AOTW: IV
MODERN JAZZ, DONE RIGHT
Canadian instrumental band BadBadNotGood was founded in 2010 by Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares and Alexander Sowinski. Later in 2016, a frequent collaborator Leland Whitty joined. Known to be inspired by artists like Tyler, The Creator, Daniel Caesar and late artist MF DOOM (all caps when you spell the man's name), BBNG have ventured into many genres of music with covers of famous songs, growing a solid fanbase and an impressive five Grammy Award nominations, with two wins.
On January 1, 2016, the band dropped their fourth studio album, IV. The album was filled to the brim with jazz fusion, rich harmonies, and complex, intricate rhythms. This was their first album welcoming a feature list, from artists like Kaytranada, Mick Jenkins and Charlotte Day Wilson. Time Moves Slow featuring Samuel T. Herring was a well-received collaboration contribution, where Herring’s voice pairs lovely with BBNB’s familiar sound, creating a velvety, easygoing R&B feel. BBNG’s music has been considered a great blueprint for samples, with producers like VANO 3000 creating “trend setting” spins of the group’s most famous musical pieces.
