AOTW: Piano Rap

Born and raised in Hackney, London, Harvey Whyte is an underground rapper, producer and pianist. His music blends styles of RnB, Jazz, Hip-hop and Neo Soul into a unique and versatile listening experience. Prior to the release of his debut album, Piano Rap,’ Harvey worked with artists Killa Yan, Sigma, Greentea Peng, Luke RV, Fatima and others. His EP ‘East 2 West’ is a take on modern Grime and drill, a style like Fellow UK artist Sainté.

Harvey then began to release singles that would be on his debut album ‘Piano Rap.’ He recorded a live rendition of his first song on the album ‘Mocktails and Weed’, which gained significant online traction and interest even from the likes of RnB artist SZA, who commented and personally messaged Harvey about his work. Piano rap takes a sharp left turn from the typical grimy lyrics on hi hat, sliding 808 heavy instrumentals, and replaces it with storytelling on melancholic piano chords.

The album touches on Whyte’s experiences with relationships and the lives of people that have come and, unfortunately, passed. Whyte states: “I want people to feel the same feelings I get when I make the music and I kinda want it to be almost the same vibe you would get as listening to an acoustic ballad, or an RnB song.”
