aotw: CASE STUDY 01
“Magnificent Moody Blues”
An album that entered with a minimalist style, Toronto based artist Daniel Caesar’s third studio album CASE STUDY 01 shows the artist dive deeper into his soul, his expressions of love, life, and his overall thought process. different from his previous acclaimed album Freudian, Daniel Caesar does well to avoid being considered a gospel artist with melodic RnB, and a constant use of blues.
ENTROPY is an amazing introduction to the album, as Caesar defines the word, using a vocal sample of J Robert Oppenheimer’s famous “destroyer of worlds” audio to highlight the opening song’s slight descent into disorder, from an upbeat song to a soft, melodic piece, with lyrics to match the atmosphere present in the instrumental.
Flowing into one of the most popular songs on the album, CYANIDE, Caesar continues his soft, melodic RnB style, introducing artists like Jacob Collier, Pharell Williams, and Brandy. Overall, this album shows Daniel Caesar making a change in style, one that was well received.
All this and more is why we chose CASE STUDY 01 as our album of the week
